Bariene Tang (Acanthurus Bariene)
Also Known As: Black Bar Tang, Bariene Surgeonfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Bariene Tang (Acanthurus bariene) is a high-end surgeonfish that earns its reputation on looks alone. Adults typically show a deep charcoal-to-black body with a pale or whitish face mask, a rich orange-to-yellow patch near the pectoral region, and lighter edging on the fins, all coming together into a sharp, formal look that holds its own even among other show tangs. The streamlined profile and crisp color blocking give it a real designer quality as it works the rockwork and cruises open water. On temperament, Bariene Tangs tend to be semi-aggressive and can get quite assertive toward other tangs and similarly shaped herbivores, particularly in cramped or heavily stocked systems. They're typically reef safe, spending most of their time grazing film and filamentous algae off rock and hard surfaces rather than corals or ornamental inverts, though a stressed or underfed individual may occasionally nip. With careful stocking, room to swim, and steady access to algae-rich foods, they usually coexist well with robust tankmates like clownfish, wrasses, Anthias, and angels, as long as there's enough rockwork to break up sight lines and ease territorial tension.
Aquarium Requirements
Bariene Tangs do best in mature reef aquariums with generous horizontal swimming space and substantial live rock for grazing. For medium specimens in the 2.5 to 3.5 inch range, a tank around 150 gallons with a long footprint is a realistic starting point, with larger volumes strongly recommended for 3.5 to 4.5 inch fish and long-term care. Aquascape with open cruising lanes alongside sturdy rock structures that create arches, ledges, and shaded caves where the fish can retreat and sleep at night. Strong, well-oxygenated flow and robust filtration help match their active lifestyle and keep water quality stable. Regular feedings of nori, marine algae, and varied herbivore foods will help maintain their body weight, deepen their coloration, and curb aggression toward tankmates.
