Blue Spotted Puffer (Canthigaster Solandri)
Blue Spotted Puffer
Also Known As: Blue Spot Toby, Solandri Puffer
Compatibility and Behavior
Here's the pitch for the Blue Spotted Puffer (Canthigaster solandri): all the personality of the big Arothron puffers, packed into a toby that won't hammer your water quality with a giant bioload. It carries a rich brown to chocolate base scattered with bright blue spots and fine lines, set off by orange or yellow accents on the flanks and around the eyes over a pale belly that makes the whole thing glow. The small torpedo-shaped body, endlessly working fins, and habit of perching on the rockwork to watch the room give it loads of character, and most settle in bold, quickly learning to beg at the front glass. On reef safety, treat this one as reef safe with caution. It tends to leave many corals alone but commonly nips snails, crabs, shrimp, and other small inverts, and it can sample fleshy polyps or clam mantles, so it's most reliable in a FOWLR tank or a very carefully planned mixed reef. It generally coexists well with peaceful to moderately assertive tankmates, though very small, slow, or delicate fish can be at risk of fin nipping or an exploratory bite, especially at feeding time.
Aquarium Requirements
The compact size is the real selling point here: where most puffers demand triple-digit tanks, a Blue Spotted does nicely in something around 55 to 75 gallons with a long footprint for specimens in the 1.5 to 4 inch range, with more volume always welcome. Give it sturdy live rock with caves and ledges to explore and rest in, and skip sharp or unstable decor that could hurt it if it startles or inflates. Standard puffer housekeeping applies: strong filtration, good surface agitation, and regular maintenance, since even a small puffer is a messy eater. Feeding does double duty as dental care, so offer a varied meaty diet of mysis, chopped shrimp, squid, and clam alongside quality marine pellets, and work in occasional hard-shelled items like small clam pieces to keep its beak-like teeth worn down.
