Blueface Angel (Pomacanthus Xanthometopon)
Also Known As: Yellowface Angelfish
Compatibility and Behavior The Blueface Angel (Pomacanthus xanthometopon) is one of the most recognizable large angelfish in the hobby, and a true centerpiece fish in the right setup. Adults are hard to miss: a vivid blue mask over the face with a bright yellow patch around the eyes, a finely reticulated blue pattern across the head and chest, a striking yellow body covered in an intricate lattice of blue-edged scales, and bold blue edging on the tail and dorsal fin. You may find a unique opportunity to experience the gorgeous transition from juvenile to adult by ordering a Smd specimen, which often feature the white stripes and greater color gradient from a juvenile.
Temperament-wise, this species can become semi-aggressive as it matures, particularly toward other large angels or similarly shaped tankmates, so stocking decisions deserve careful thought. It's generally not considered fully reef safe — LPS corals, some soft corals, and clam mantles may get nipped — though individual behavior does vary and some experienced hobbyists have managed it successfully in carefully chosen reef setups. Most aquarists, though, will be happiest keeping this fish in a fish-only or FOWLR system where it can be the star of the show.
Aquarium Requirements A 180-gallon minimum is the starting point for an adult Blueface, and bigger is genuinely better. This is a large, active fish that needs room to move and territory to claim. Extensive live rock with caves, arches, and overhangs gives it the grazing surfaces and shelter it's looking for, while strong, well-oxygenated flow and efficient filtration keep the water quality stable enough to support a fish of this size long-term. Diet matters a lot with large angels: high-quality angelfish preparations that include marine algae and sponge content are important for long-term health and immunity, supplemented with mysis, chopped seafood, and quality pellets for variety.
