Cardinal Pajama (Sphaeramia Namatoptera)
Also Known As: Pajama Cardinalfish, Spotted Cardinalfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Pajama Cardinal is a captivating schooling Cardinalfish species that does great in groups. Like its cousin, the Banggai Cardinal, this species will gracefully hover around rockwork and corals. You can't miss those unmistakable, reddish eyes. The front of the body shows a silver-green face, broken sharply by a bold black mid-body belt, and the rear half is covered in polka dots that complete the patterned-pajamas look the species is named for. This is a reef-safe, peaceful, community-friendly species that fits well into reef aquariums alongside other non-aggressive fish. In bigger systems, the Pajama Cardinal is an amazing schooling species; dozens can be kept together and they will slowly pass back and forth through the midwater column in a big school.
Aquarium Requirements
Pajama Cardinals do well in smaller to medium-sized, mature reef aquariums with calm to moderate flow and plenty of rockwork or branching structures for hovering and shelter. A mix of open swimming space and shaded areas or overhangs is ideal, giving them places to retreat when startled while still keeping them visible most of the time. They adapt to a wide range of lighting, from soft, lower-light setups to brighter reef systems, as long as some dimmer zones are part of the aquascape. They're slow, deliberate feeders, so peaceful tankmates that won't outcompete them at meal times are ideal. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped meaty foods, enriched brine, and quality micro-pellets, feeding gently so the food stays suspended long enough for them to pick it off in the water column.
