Dragon Wrasse (Novaculichthys Taeniourus)
Key Facts
Also Known As: Rockmover Wrasse, Carpet Wrasse
Compatibility and Behavior The Dragon Wrasse is one of the more dramatic transformations in the hobby — juveniles arrive looking almost otherworldly, with elongated flowing fins that mimic drifting seaweed and distinctive dorsal spines that stick up like antlers. It's a remarkable camouflage adaptation, and in a display tank it's genuinely eye-catching. As they mature, that ornate juvenile look gives way to a bolder, more robust adult form with a personality to match — territorial, confident, and highly active around its preferred hunting grounds.
This is not a reef-safe species at any life stage. Dragon Wrasses are notorious for flipping rocks and bulldozing substrate in search of food, which means corals get disturbed, aquascape features get rearranged, and small invertebrates, shrimp, snails, and worms are fair game. A fish-only system with robust, similarly sized tankmates is the right environment — and only one Dragon Wrasse per tank, as they don't tolerate conspecifics well.
One practical note on sizing: small to medium specimens will generally be juveniles, while medium to large will more likely be adults. If the life stage matters to you, reach out before ordering and we can confirm what the current batch looks like.
Aquarium Requirements A minimum of 75 gallons with a deep sand bed and open swimming space gives this fish room to do what it does — which is move constantly and dig enthusiastically. Rockwork should be stable and well-secured, because this species will test it. A tight-fitting lid is essential; Dragon Wrasses are strong jumpers and an open top is a genuine risk. Moderate to strong filtration and consistent maintenance help keep up with the bioload of an energetic, heavy-feeding carnivore. Meaty marine foods — mussels, shrimp, snails, and quality marine pellets — form the core of a good diet.
