Eight Line Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus Octotaenia)
Also Known As: Eight Lined Wrasse, Eightline Wrasse
Compatibility and Behavior
The Eight Line Wrasse is a bold, active rock-dweller that spends much of its time weaving through caves and crevices, which makes it a visually engaging centerpiece for established reef aquariums. It can be pugnacious toward similar-shaped wrasses and other small, timid tank mates, so it is usually best kept as the only Pseudocheilinus wrasse in the display, with robust companions that can hold their own. While this species is generally considered reef safe with corals, it may prey on small ornamental crustaceans and tiny benthic invertebrates, so very small shrimp or crabs are not ideal tank mates. In larger, aquascaped systems with plenty of hiding spots, aggression often disperses, and the fish settles into a routine of cruising the rockwork and hunting for tiny pests and leftover food.
Aquarium Requirements
This species appreciates a mature reef-style aquarium with extensive live rock, overhangs, and caves where it can retreat and sleep in mucus cocoons at night. A tight-fitting lid or mesh screen is strongly recommended, as Eight Line Wrasses can be powerful jumpers when startled or chased. Provide moderate to strong flow, stable, high-quality filtration, and regular feeding opportunities so the fish can graze on copepods and other microfauna between meals. A well-established rockscape not only supports natural hunting behavior but also helps diffuse territoriality by offering multiple pathways and line-of-sight breaks.
