Flameback Angel (Centropyge Acanthops)
Also Known As: African Flameback Angelfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Flameback Angel packs a lot of color into a small footprint. A glowing orange-to-gold saddle runs across the back and dorsal fin, set against a deep royal-blue body and tail, with a bright yellow to orange face and fine blue edging on the fins. It's an intense, high-contrast look that reads well even in smaller reef displays, and the fish's constant activity makes it hard to miss as it darts through the rockwork picking at film algae and microfauna throughout the day.
Temperament is semi-aggressive, with a notable territorial streak toward other dwarf angels and similarly shaped tankmates, particularly in smaller systems. That said, it generally coexists well with a range of small to medium community fish like tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and robust gobies. One dwarf angel per tank is the standard recommendation in smaller setups. Reef safety follows the typical Centropyge pattern. Many individuals do fine in mixed reefs, focusing their attention on algal films and detritus, but nipping at LPS, soft corals, zoanthids, or clam mantles is always a possibility, especially if the fish is underfed or confined. Frequent varied feeding and a mature reef with plenty of natural grazing surfaces help minimize that risk, though nothing fully eliminates it.
Aquarium Requirements
The Flameback Angel does best in a mature system with abundant live rock arranged into caves, arches, and crevices for grazing and retreat. A 55-gallon tank is the practical recommendation for a single adult, providing enough space to match their activity level and keep territorial behavior manageable. The rockwork should extend through much of the tank rather than clustering in one spot, giving the fish multiple territories to patrol without feeling boxed in. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is worth having in place. Like most dwarf angels, Flamebacks can jump when startled, and it happens quickly. Moderate flow, strong biological filtration, and consistent maintenance keep water quality where it needs to be in these relatively small but active systems. Feed a varied diet in small, frequent meals: sponge-based angelfish formulas, spirulina, nori, mysis, finely chopped seafood, and quality pellets. Their constant grazing metabolism means regular feeding genuinely matters for long-term health.
