Flashing Tilefish EXPERT (Hoplolatilus Chlupatyi)
Also Known As: Chameleon Sand Tilefish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Flashing Tilefish lives up to its name in a way few fish actually do. It can rapidly shift between electric blue, green, yellow, and pink hues, putting on a true chameleon-style light show through the day. At rest, the sleek, elongated body typically shows a blue-green base with a subtle pink sheen, accented by a luminous stripe that runs along the back and through the eye and really pops under reef lighting. Personality-wise this is a generally peaceful fish that fits well into community and reef aquariums, especially alongside calmer tankmates that won't outcompete it at feeding time. It's considered reef safe in most setups, since it typically ignores corals and clams, though boisterous or predatory tankmates can stress it out, and it may act defensively if cornered in tight spaces or harassed. Like other tilefish, Flashing Tilefish tend to be shy early on, hovering midwater near a burrow or rock overhang and darting for shelter when startled. Once they settle in, many specimens grow more confident and spend a lot more time out in the open water column flashing those colors.
Aquarium Requirements
Plan on a mature, well-established marine aquarium of at least 50 to 70 gallons, with both open swimming room and secure shelter. A deep sandy bottom is important for burrow building, paired with stable rockwork that creates caves, ledges, and crevices where the fish can retreat and feel safe. A tight-fitting, escape-proof lid is non-negotiable. Tilefish are notorious jumpers and will go through any open gap when spooked or during lights-on/lights-off transitions. They tend to appreciate moderate to lower light areas along with gentle to moderate flow, which lets them hover comfortably in the water column rather than constantly fighting the current. Offer small, frequent feedings of meaty foods like mysis, enriched brine, and finely chopped seafood. Consistent feeding is one of the best ways to keep this fish visible and confident in the aquascape rather than constantly tucked away.
