Goatfish Yellow (Mulloidichthys Martinicus)
Also Known As: Yellowfin Goatfish, Goldsaddle Goatfish
Compatibility and Behavior The Yellow Goatfish (Parupeneus cyclostomus) is a real eye-catcher on the bottom of the tank. The body shows a rich canary-yellow to golden coloration that really lights up against a white sand bed and reef rock, and the streamlined shape paired with a forked tail and those signature twin chin barbels gives it a true "working fish" look as it cruises the substrate. This is a generally peaceful species toward most other fish, spending much of its time sifting sand for worms, small crustaceans, and any leftover meaty food it can find. It coexists with a wide range of community fish as long as tankmates aren't overly aggressive or extremely territorial around the substrate. The one important consideration is that Yellow Goatfish naturally prey on small invertebrates, so they're not the right choice for aquariums where tiny ornamental shrimp or bite-sized crabs are part of the display.
Aquarium Requirements A mature marine aquarium with a wide footprint is ideal paired with extensive open sand for foraging. A soft, fine substrate is important here to protect those sensitive barbels as the fish sifts through it, complemented by rockwork that provides caves, shaded resting spots, and clear runways for cruising the bottom. Moderate flow tends to work best. Enough to keep detritus from settling heavily, but gentle enough that the fish can work the sand without being pushed around. These are active carnivores with hearty appetites, so strong biological filtration and consistent maintenance help handle the bioload from frequent meaty feedings and constant sand-stirring. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, clam, squid, and quality carnivore pellets to keep this fish well fed, healthy, and focused on natural sand-sifting behavior rather than getting bored at the surface.
