Gray Poma Angel (Chaetodonlopus Melanosoma)
Compatibility and Behavior
The Grey Poma is one of those angels that commands a tank through sheer presence rather than flashy coloration. Juveniles have a striking yellow stripe across their face, and tend to show darker, more intricately patterned bodies that gradually give way to a charcoal-to-gray adult form with lighter scaling, dusky fins, and subtle facial markings — a more understated look than some of its Pomacanthus cousins, but genuinely elegant in a well-aquascaped display. Temperament-wise, this species tends toward the semi-aggressive end of the spectrum, and as it matures it can become increasingly territorial, particularly with other large angels or fish of similar build and stature. Most hobbyists find it works best when kept as the sole show angel in the display, with tankmates chosen carefully to avoid anything likely to trigger territorial behavior. Like most large Pomacanthus, it's generally not considered reef safe. It may pick at LPS corals, softies, and clam mantles, so it's better suited to a fish-only with live rock setup, or a reef where you're comfortable accepting some level of risk.
Aquarium Requirements
Smaller specimens in the 1–2" range can get started in a 60-gallon system, but this is a fish with a lot of growing ahead of it — plan your upgrades accordingly, as a maturing Grey Poma will need 180 gallons or more to have the room it requires as a full adult. A complex aquascape with arches, overhangs, and cave-like structures gives it territory to claim and places to retreat, which tends to reduce stress and aggression at any size. Strong flow and high-capacity filtration are genuinely important here; this species carries a substantial bioload and does best in systems with consistent, dialed-in water quality and regular maintenance. Diet should be varied and include sponge-based angelfish preparations alongside marine algae or nori, quality pellets, and meaty foods like mysis and chopped seafood — hitting that variety regularly goes a long way toward long-term health and color.
