Hogfish Spanish (Bodianus Rufus)
Also Known As: Spanish Hog
Compatibility and Behavior The Spanish Hogfish (Bodianus rufus) is a bold, high-visibility Hogfish that wears one of the most distinctive color schemes in the Caribbean. The upper body shows a rich purple to violet that melts into a bright yellow lower half and tail, creating a dramatic two-tone effect under reef lighting. Juveniles often display cleaner, sharper color separation and may even show cleaner wrasse–style behavior in their younger stages, while adults deepen in color and develop a more imposing, torpedo-shaped profile as they patrol the rockwork. Personality-wise this is a semi-aggressive species that becomes increasingly assertive as it grows, so it tends to do best alongside similarly sized or larger, confident tankmates rather than timid nano fish. The Spanish Hogfish is reef-safe with strong caution, as it won't bother corals. However, it will often prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other small invertebrates. Given the right tank, though, a Spanish Hogfish becomes an outgoing, constantly active swimmer that brings real motion and intense color to the mid and lower water column.
Aquarium Requirements A spacious, mature marine aquarium with extensive live rock, caves, and crevices is the right setup here, offering both shelter and natural hunting routes through the reef. A tank with a generous footprint and plenty of rock structure does a lot of work managing aggression, since it breaks sightlines and gives the fish multiple territories to cruise rather than fixating on a single tankmate. Moderate to strong flow and robust filtration are both worth investing in, given the active lifestyle and meaty diet, which together add up on the bioload side. This species adapts well to a wide range of lighting styles and is best suited to larger FOWLR setups or carefully stocked reefs that don't rely on small crustaceans or snails. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, clam, squid, and quality marine carnivore pellets to keep this fish well conditioned, colorful, and less inclined to take out its energy on tankmates.
