Juv Formosa Wrasse (Coris Formosa)
Key Facts
Also Known As: Queen Coris Wrasse
Compatibility, Behavior, and Environment
The Juvenile Formosa Wrasse is a vibrant and dynamic addition to large marine aquariums. Juvenile Formosa Fairy Wrasses are especially colorful and peaceful, while adults become more robust and may show territorial behavior, particularly toward similar wrasse species. They are not considered reef safe, as both adults and juveniles are known to uproot rockwork, disturb substrate, and consume a wide variety of ornamental invertebrates, such as snails, crabs, and shrimp. Due to their size and activity level, they thrive best in fish-only systems, sharing the space with other large, assertive tank mates. Only one Formosa Fairy Wrasse should be kept per tank, as adults may act aggressively toward conspecifics.
Aquarium Requirements
A minimum tank size of 50 gallons (for juveniles) is recommended, with a very deep sand bed (at least 3 inches) for burrowing and nocturnal refuge. Secure all rockwork and decorations, as this wrasse may move sand and stones in search of prey. The tank should be covered to prevent escapes, and a robust filtration system is essential to maintain high water quality, given the heavy bioload as these grow larger. Offer open swimming space alongside caves and secure hiding areas—Formosa Wrasses are highly active and benefit from environmental enrichment.
