Lemon Peel Angel (Centropyge Flavissimus)
Also Known As: Yellow Angelfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Lemon Peel Angel shares the same solid-yellow base as the False Lemon Peel, but up close the differences are clear. The body is a brighter, more intense lemon yellow, accented by a distinct blue or whitish ring around the eye, a dark spot on the rear edge of the gill cover, and electric blue edging along the dorsal, anal, and tail fins that really lights up under reef lighting.Personality-wise, Lemon Peels can be semi-aggressive and pushy toward other dwarf angels or similarly shaped tankmates, so it’s best to keep one dwarf Angel per tank unless it’s a very big system. On the reef safety front, this species is reef-safe with caution, as it may nip at fleshy LPS, zoanthids, and clam mantles, especially if not well-fed. Individual fish vary, but the risk is real enough that careful monitoring in coral-heavy systems is a good idea regardless.
Aquarium Requirements
Lemon Peel Angels do best in mature systems with abundant live rock for grazing, exploring, and claiming territory. A 70-gallon tank is a reasonable starting point, giving them enough space and rock structure to reduce stress and keep aggression in check. Caves, crevices, and overhangs are appreciated for security and provide natural surfaces for the filamentous algae and biofilms they graze on throughout the day. Stable water quality and good biological filtration matter more than any specific flow or lighting preference. Diet should lean algae-heavy: spirulina and algae-based foods, nori, and quality pellets as the foundation, with meaty offerings like mysis and brine shrimp mixed in regularly. Keeping them well-fed on an algae-rich diet is one of the better strategies for reducing coral-nipping behavior over the long term.
