Compatibility and Behavior
Set the Spotted Mandarin (Synchiropus picturatus) next to its swirling-lined Green cousin and the difference jumps out: instead of maze-like lines, this one wears bold green spots ringed in dark outlines over a blue-green base, with orange and black markings across the fins and head, for a look that's more painted or tattooed than psychedelic. It moves the same way, though, doing that slow, hovering dragonet "hop" across the rock and sand as it methodically hunts rather than swimming out in open water. This is a peaceful, shy, reef safe fish you can trust around corals and inverts, but it grazes constantly on tiny crustaceans, so it does poorly alongside fast or aggressive feeders that outcompete it and can stress it off its food. Keep only one male per tank, since males will fight, and avoid other dragonets or pod-hunting wrasses that drain the same food supply unless your system is very large and mature.

Aquarium Requirements
As with every mandarin, the real work is building the pod population before the fish arrives. It needs a fully mature tank, ideally running six to twelve months, with generous live rock (roughly 1 to 1.5 lbs per gallon) supporting a thriving, self-sustaining copepod and amphipod population. At least 30 gallons is the minimum, but 50 or more is strongly preferred, since more rock and substrate means a larger, more resilient pod supply. A refugium with macroalgae is one of the best additions you can make, acting as a protected pod nursery that continuously restocks the display. Gentle to moderate flow suits it well, and plenty of rocky hiding spots help it feel secure enough to forage in the open. Supplement its grazing with small amounts of enriched frozen foods where accepted, but understand that a steady live pod population is what sustains it long-term.

Caution during acclimation: All mandarins have a thick slime coat that can be toxic toward other fish when kept in small confined spaces such as an acclimation bucket. Please acclimate your Mandarin separately to avoid poisoning your other new arrivals.
