Mystery Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus Ocellatus)
Also Known As: Whitebarred Wrasse
Compatibility and Behavior The Mystery Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus ocellatus) has a look that's hard to mistake — a rich purple to magenta base color with thin, vertical lines (can vary between individuals), a yellow tail, and a distinctive spot near the tail base that gives it an almost painted quality under reef lighting. You can't miss their mesmerizing glowing, golden eyes peeking through the rockwork. It's generally reef safe with corals and clams, but it carries a semi-aggressive streak that's worth planning around. Very small ornamental crustaceans like tiny shrimp or crabs may be targeted, and shy gobies or other small, passive fish can find themselves on the receiving end of some persistent harassment in tighter quarters. Pair it with confident, similarly sized tankmates and give it plenty of rockwork to claim as its own, and it tends to settle into a role as one of the more engaging, personality-driven fish in the display.
Aquarium Requirements Complex rockwork is the foundation of a good Mystery Wrasse setup — this species doesn't bury in sand, but it relies heavily on caves, crevices, and shaded areas for security, sleeping, and the kind of constant foraging it does throughout the day. A 50-gallon minimum with stable water conditions, moderate to strong varied flow, and well-established biological filtration suits it well. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential; it will jump if frightened or chased. Multiple small daily feedings of mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped meaty marine fare keep it in good condition and channel some of that energy productively.
