Pearlscale Butterfly (Chaetodon Xanthurus)
Also Known As: Yellowtail Butterflyfish, Pearlscale Butterflyfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Pearlscale is all about what happens when the light hits it. The fine lattice of dark scales over a pale, pearly body catches reef lighting and takes on a soft shimmer that a still photo never quite captures, and it's really the reason to want this fish. An orange tail, gentle yellow fin accents, and a dark eye band fill out the rest, carried on the tall, gliding frame typical of the family. In the tank it behaves like a textbook peaceful Chaetodon: easygoing with dissimilar tankmates, happy among calm tangs, wrasses, and Anthias, and only mildly territorial toward other butterflies or lookalikes if the system is tight. On corals it sits right in the middle of the butterfly pack, neither an especially voracious nipper nor a trustworthy one, so the standard reef safe with caution applies. It may sample soft corals, LPS, zoanthids, and clam mantles, which makes it a comfortable FOWLR fish and a calculated risk in a mixed reef.
Aquarium Requirements
Care here is standard-issue butterfly care, so if you've kept one before none of it will surprise you. A mature tank with plenty of live rock, open swimming lanes, and stable water is the foundation, with small specimens starting around 75 to 90 gallons and larger ones wanting 100-plus, all backed by moderate flow and strong filtration. The only species-specific advice worth stressing is at the dinner table, since a well-conditioned Pearlscale is both healthier and less likely to test your corals: keep it on frequent small feedings of mysis, finely chopped seafood, quality marine pellets, and frozen omnivore blends.
Specifications
