Royal Dotty Back (Pictichromis Paccagnellae)
Also Known As: Bicolor Dottyback
Compatibility and Behavior The Royal Dottyback (Pictichromis paccagnellae) is a compact reef fish that brings real attitude along with the color. The body is sharply split into two halves, with a deep magenta to royal purple front and a vibrant golden yellow back and tail. The contrast is unmistakable under reef lighting and really sets this fish apart against live rock and coral. The torpedo-shaped body and alert, watchful eyes give it a constant sense of motion, and you'll typically see it darting in and out of caves, hovering near its preferred hideouts, and investigating anything new that enters its territory. People often mistake this species for the Royal Gramma, which features nearly identical coloration but is a different, more peaceful species.
Personality-wise, The Royal Dottyback is a semi-aggressive species, especially in tight spaces or alongside very passive tankmates. It can get territorial toward other dottybacks, small basslets, and similarly shaped fish, and it may harass very timid species in tanks that are too small or sparsely aquascaped. It's generally considered reef safe with corals, but may opportunistically prey on very small ornamental crustaceans like tiny shrimp if underfed or confined. In a well-structured tank with plenty of rockwork and robust tankmates such as clownfish, fairy and flasher wrasses, and other similarly assertive community fish, most Royal Dottybacks settle into a defined territory and turn into a hardy, long-lived centerpiece for nano and mid-sized reefs.
Aquarium Requirements Royal Dottybacks thrive in smaller reef or FOWLR systems with abundant live rock, caves, and crevices where they can stake out a territory and retreat when startled. A mature, stable aquarium with strong biological filtration is the right environment, since these active carnivores appreciate frequent small feedings and consistent water quality. Aquascape with arches, caves, and branching rock structures to break sightlines, which helps diffuse aggression and gives both the dottyback and its tankmates safe paths to move around. A secure, tight-fitting lid is strongly recommended, as dottybacks can jump when startled or when chasing food near the surface. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets or frozen foods to keep this fish well-conditioned, colorful, and less inclined to take its energy out on tankmates.
