Compatibility and Behavior
The Tobacco Basslet (Serranus tabacarius) is a slender, torpedo-shaped Caribbean dwarf sea bass, and its signature is a thick yellowish-orange stripe that runs from the chin, beneath the eye, and straight back to the tail, splitting a white belly from a mottled upper body patterned in dark saddles and irregular pale blotches. Dark bars cross the snout and nape, and the truncate tail carries dark brown submarginal stripes on both lobes that meet to form a distinctive dark "C" or "V," with the fin edges often showing a pale greenish-blue tint on healthy fish. Juveniles tend to be the most vividly marked, and this is a species that rewards close observation. Behaviorally it's a confident, alert hunter that hovers in the water column above the rockwork and patrols between perches, dropping onto small prey on the sand. There's a neat wild behavior worth mentioning: it sometimes shadows goatfish, snapping up invertebrates flushed out as the goatfish probe the substrate. It's coral safe and won't bother sessile inverts, but it's reef safe with caution, since it will likely eat ornamental shrimp, small crabs, and any fish small enough to swallow. It can be assertive toward smaller tankmates, especially other bottom-oriented fish, so avoid small gobies, blennies, dartfish, and juvenile damsels in favor of similarly sized or larger community fish that occupy different zones. Keep one per tank unless the system is 110 gallons or larger, where multiple comparable-sized specimens introduced together can work. One fascinating quirk: Serranus basslets are synchronous hermaphrodites, carrying both male and female tissue at the same time.

Aquarium Requirements
A 55 to 70 gallon tank suits a single specimen well, and the layout matters more than the number. It needs open water above the rock for patrolling and hovering, combined with caves, ledges, and rubble pockets to bolt into when startled, so avoid both a solid rock wall with no swimming column and a bare tank with nowhere to hide. A sandy substrate lets it sift and forage naturally, and it favors a shaded cave with subdued lighting as a home base. Moderate flow works nicely, and because these are messy, enthusiastic carnivores with high metabolisms, robust biological filtration paired with a good protein skimmer is worth investing in. A tight-fitting lid is essential and often underestimated, since Tobacco Basslets have a well-earned reputation for jumping, sometimes in the middle of the night. Feed slowly and target food with a turkey baster so it's eaten before it settles into the sand, and vary the menu rather than leaning on a single frozen item, which keeps long-term condition up and prevents pickiness.
