Whitetail Pygmy Angel (Centropyge Flavicauda)
Compatibility and Behavior
The Whitetail Pygmy Angel is a small fish with subtle but beautiful details.. The body is a deep blue to dark chocolate-brown, with electric blue edging along the dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins, and a translucent white to pale yellow tail that really stands out under reef lighting. Some individuals show a slightly lighter, peachy or yellowish tone on the face that adds a subtle two-tone contrast against that crisp white tail. Don't let the size fool you on temperament. This species can be surprisingly bold, often staking out a favored cave or section of rockwork and defending it with more confidence than you'd expect from a fish this small. It generally gets along fine with a variety of small to medium community fish, but it can be hard on very timid tankmates and tends to be intolerant of other Centropyge in smaller systems. One dwarf angel per tank is the practical approach unless the setup is large enough to give everyone room.
Reef safety follows the standard Centropyge pattern. Many individuals spend most of their time grazing film algae and picking at rock surfaces without bothering corals, but some will nip at fleshy LPS, soft corals, or clam mantles, especially if underfed or kept in a cramped setup. Frequent varied feeding and a mature reef with plenty of natural grazing surfaces help reduce that risk, though some degree of uncertainty will always come with the territory.
Aquarium Requirements
The Whitetail Pygmy Angel does best in a mature system with abundant live rock arranged into caves, arches, and crevices for grazing and retreating. A 30 to 40-gallon tank is a workable minimum for a single specimen, but 55 gallons or more is a better target if it will share space with other semi-aggressive fish. Rockwork with vertical structure and shaded pockets helps this naturally secretive species feel secure and tends to keep aggression in check. A tight-fitting lid or mesh screen is important. Like most dwarf angels, this one can jump when startled or chased, and it moves quickly. Feed a varied diet that includes sponge-based angelfish preparations, spirulina, marine algae, mysis, enriched brine, and small pellets or flakes. Consistent, varied feeding is one of the better ways to keep them healthy and less inclined to explore corals as a food source.
