Compatibility and Behavior
The Yellow Leaf Fish (Taenianotus triacanthus) is one of the ocean's great impressionists. Laterally compressed and leaf-shaped, with a tall sail-like dorsal running nearly the length of its back, it doesn't swim so much as perch motionless on rock and coral, rocking gently side to side to mimic a drifting leaf or scrap of algae caught in the current, then striking with startling speed when prey wanders too close. The yellow form is especially prized, though the species also turns up in red, brown, pink, black, and mottled variants, and here's a neat quirk: it sheds its outer skin every 10 to 14 days or so, emerging each time with refreshed coloration. It's reef safe with corals and won't touch sessile inverts, but make no mistake, it's an ambush predator that will eat any fish, shrimp, or small crab it can fit in that big upturned mouth, so choose tankmates carefully. It's also a slow, deliberate feeder easily outcompeted at mealtime, so it belongs with calm, similarly paced tankmates rather than fast, boisterous eaters. One safety note worth taking seriously: this fish carries venomous dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines, so caution during tank maintenance is essential.

Aquarium Requirements
Because this is a sedentary percher rather than a swimmer, open swimming room matters far less than the aquascape. Give it a biologically mature tank of at least 40 gallons, with larger specimens happier in 55 or more, built out with plenty of live rock, outcroppings, ledges, caves, and crevices where it can settle in and melt into the background. Low to moderate, gentle flow suits it best, and many keepers find a soft coral setup with sponges, macroalgae, or corals that echo the fish's coloration helps it feel secure and look right at home. The regular molting makes consistent water quality especially important, so stay on top of partial water changes and keep nitrates low to support healthy shedding cycles. Feeding takes patience: it strongly prefers live foods like saltwater feeder or ghost shrimp, though many specimens can be trained onto frozen mysis, krill, or silversides with a feeding stick, offered every two to three days.
