Coral Beauty Angel (Centropyge Bispinosa)
Compatibility and Behavior
The Coral Beauty (Centropyge bispinosa) is one of the most popular dwarf angels in the hobby, and it's easy to understand why — it's versatile, hardy, deeply colorful, and full of personality. Its compact body is typically deep royal blue to purple with blazing orange to yellow vertical swirls or patches along the sides, and bright blue edging tracing the dorsal, anal, and tail fins that gives it an almost glowing outline under reef lighting. One of the more appealing quirks of this species is how much individual variation exists — some fish lean heavily purple with modest orange, others are nearly half and half, and the pattern balance is unique to each fish.
Temperament-wise, Coral Beauties are generally semi-peaceful but can become territorial toward other dwarf angels or similarly shaped tankmates, so they're typically best kept as the only dwarf angel in small to mid-sized systems. They're considered one of the more reef-friendly options in the Centropyge genus, but "reef safe with caution" is the honest description — fleshy LPS corals, zoanthids, and clam mantles may occasionally get sampled, and the likelihood tends to go down in well-fed fish.
Aquarium Requirements
A mature, established aquarium of around 70 gallons or larger gives this active fish the territory and rock structure it needs to feel at home and stay settled. Coral Beauties spend a significant portion of their day grazing over rockwork, so plenty of live rock with caves, crevices, and overhangs is important both for foraging and for security. They adapt reasonably well to a range of lighting and flow conditions, making them more forgiving than many reef fish in that regard. Diet should be varied and algae-forward — nori sheets, marine algae or spirulina-based foods, quality pellets, and frozen fare like mysis and brine shrimp all contribute to keeping their coloration vivid and their immune system strong over the long term.
