Philippine Yellow Tang (Acanthurus Pyroferus)
Also Known As: Yellow Mimic Tang, Mimic Lemon Peel Tang
Compatibility and Behavior
The Philippine Yellow Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) is a fascinating fish with a great backstory. It's almost solid lemon-yellow, looking strikingly like a Lemon Peel Angelfish at first glance. That resemblance is no accident: this is known as a "mimic" tang, and juvenile Acanthurus pyroferus closely imitates the color and pattern of dwarf angelfish in its range (here, the Lemon Peel Angelfish), which likely helps it blend into the reef community in the wild. Over a period of years as it matures into its adult "Chocolate Tang" form, the body gradually shifts toward warm tan-to-chocolate tones with darker patches and more subdued accents, but most reefers seek out these juveniles specifically for that glowing yellow color and angel-like look. Behavior-wise, Philippine Yellows are generally peaceful to semi-aggressive, with most of their attitude aimed at other tangs or similarly shaped algae grazers, especially in smaller or crowded systems. They're typically considered reef safe, spending much of the day picking film and filamentous algae off rock and hard surfaces rather than corals or ornamental inverts. In most home aquariums they coexist well with clownfish, wrasses, Anthias, and other peaceful to moderately assertive fish when given room and a thoughtful stocking plan.
Aquarium Requirements
Philippine Yellows do best in mature reef aquariums with plenty of horizontal swimming space and established live rock for constant grazing. For specimens in the 1.5 to 3.5 inch range, a tank around 90 to 120 gallons with a long footprint is the right target, with larger volumes preferred for long-term care of medium and large fish. Aquascape with open cruising lanes, arches and overhangs for security, and porous rock that grows the natural algae films these fish love to browse throughout the day. Strong, well-oxygenated flow and robust filtration support their active lifestyle and keep water quality stable. Regular feedings of nori, marine algae, and varied herbivore foods, offered alongside a quality community diet, will help hold that bright juvenile yellow as long as possible, support a smooth transition into the chocolate adult phase, and keep aggression in check.
