Compatibility and Behavior
The Flame Hawk (Neocirrhites armatus) is one of the most vividly colored small predators you can keep, a stocky, laterally compressed fish in brilliant scarlet to fire-red, offset by a bold black stripe along the base of the dorsal and dark rings around the eyes. Each short dorsal spine is tipped with a tiny tassel of cirri, the signature hawkfish touch, and viewed from the side the profile is almost grouper-like. Here's a neat bit of biology that shapes its whole behavior: hawkfish lack a functional swim bladder, so this fish doesn't hover or cruise. Instead it props itself up on stiffened pectoral fins atop rock and coral, surveying the tank and making short deliberate hops between favorite perches. In the wild it's an obligate resident of branching Stylophora and Pocillopora heads in shallow surge zones, and in captivity it typically claims a lair in the rockwork near a high perch, darting between the two whenever startled. It's coral safe and won't nip LPS or SPS, but it's reef safe with caution, since most individuals will eventually hunt ornamental shrimp, small hermits, snails, and tiny crabs. It can also be territorial toward similarly shaped bottom dwellers, so small gobies, blennies, and dartfish may be harassed, while mid-water community fish like tangs, dwarf angels, clownfish, larger wrasses, and royal grammas usually coexist just fine. Behavior varies a lot between individuals, and some Flame Hawks have lived peacefully alongside cleaner shrimp for years, so keeping the fish well fed and providing generous rockwork territory both help. Because it's possessive of a perch, add it last so other fish can establish first, and keep only one per tank unless the system is very large.

Aquarium Requirements
The small to medium specimens usually available settle in well in a 30 to 40 gallon tank, though 50 gallons or more is preferable in a mixed community so there's enough territory to spread aggression. Horizontal footprint and vertical structure matter far more than raw volume, so build in plenty of live rock with high outcroppings, ridges, and branching formations for perching, paired with adjacent caves and crevices for a retreat. Strong, well-oxygenated flow with good surface agitation suits it best, reflecting the shallow surge-zone reefs it comes from, and it tolerates bright lighting without issue. A tight-fitting lid with all cutouts screened is genuinely essential, as Flame Hawks are confirmed jumpers that will find any gap when startled. A new arrival may refuse food briefly, but fresh raw shrimp, squid, or live brine usually breaks the ice, after which it readily takes prepared foods, and supplementing with vitamins and omega-3s helps keep that intense red from fading toward orange over time. One practical note worth weighing before you buy: because it hides instantly and darts into the rockwork, this is a notoriously difficult fish to catch once established, so treat it as a permanent addition.
