Halfblack Angel (Centropyge Vrolikki)
Compatibility and Behavior
The Half Black Angel has one of the more interesting looks in the dwarf angel world. Its front half is a soft silvery-tan to pearly white, and from mid-body through the tail it shifts into a deep, velvety black, with subtle blue to violet edging on the fins that really pops under reef lighting. That high-contrast pattern makes it easy to track as it weaves in and out of rockwork. As far as temperament goes, Half Black Angels are generally semi-peaceful with most community fish but can get territorial toward other dwarf angels or similarly shaped species, particularly in smaller systems. It's worth keeping just one dwarf angel per tank unless the setup is large enough to give everyone room to establish their own space. Reef safety tends to depend on the individual. Many hobbyists keep them without issue alongside a wide variety of corals, but some individual specimens may nip at LPS, zoanthids, or clam mantles, especially if they're underfed or feeling crowded.
Aquarium Requirements
Half Black Angels do best in mature, established systems with plenty of live rock. Caves, crevices, and overhangs give them security and natural grazing surfaces for the algae films and microorganisms they pick at constantly throughout the day. A 55-gallon tank is a workable minimum, though more space is always appreciated, especially if the tank includes other assertive fish. They adapt well to a range of lighting and flow conditions, but stable water quality and consistent maintenance matter more than any specific parameter target. Feed a varied diet that covers both sides of their omnivorous appetite: marine algae, spirulina-based foods, and nori for grazing, alongside meaty offerings like mysis and brine shrimp. Keeping them well-fed is also one of the better ways to discourage any coral-nipping tendencies.
