Melas Angel (Centropyge Tibicen)
Also Known As: Keyhole Angelfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Melas Angel is one of the bolder members of the Centropyge genus, and its coloration reflects that personality. Adults have a deep blue-black to charcoal body with a distinct white oval "keyhole" marking mid-body, yellow pelvic fins and a yellow-washed anal fin, and a subtle blue sheen on the tail that catches the eye under reef lighting. Juveniles tend to show sharper contrast and cleaner edges on the keyhole mark, which softens a bit as they grow into their adult coloration. Temperament-wise, Melas Angels can be assertive toward other Centropyge or similarly shaped tankmates, and in smaller systems, that territorial behavior can become a real management issue. One dwarf angel per tank is strongly recommended here. Reef safety is also worth approaching with realistic expectations. Some individuals will nip at LPS, some soft corals, and clam mantles, and they commonly sample sponges, tunicates, and other sessile invertebrates. "Reef safe with caution" is generous for some specimens — this is a species to think carefully about before adding to a coral-heavy display.
Aquarium Requirements
The Melas Angel needs more room than most dwarf angels. As one of the larger dwarf angel species, a 70 to 90-gallon tank is a practical minimum, and more space is always better as the fish grows. Mature live rock is important, both for grazing and for providing the caves, crevices, and overhangs that help diffuse territorial behavior and give them secure places to retreat. Moderate to strong flow and robust filtration suit them well. Diet should be varied and algae-inclusive: marine algae, spirulina, and sponge-based or angelfish-specific preparations as the foundation, rounded out with quality pellets and meaty foods like mysis and finely chopped seafood. Consistent, varied feeding helps keep them in good condition and is one of the better ways to reduce opportunistic nipping.
