Red and Blue Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus Cyanopleura)
Also Known As: Bluehead Fairy Wrasse, Blue Scaled Fairy Wrasse
Compatibility and Behavior The Red and Blue Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus cyanopleura) is a midwater fairy wrasse that brings constant motion and vivid coloration to peaceful reef and community setups. It's generally considered reef safe with corals and most invertebrates, and tends to do well alongside peaceful to semi-aggressive tankmates that won't bully or outcompete it at feeding time. In a roomy tank with good rockwork, most individuals settle into a comfortable routine — working the water column, flashing their colors, and putting on a particularly good show around feeding time or when other wrasses are nearby.
Aquarium Requirements Open water is a priority here. The Red and Blue Wrasse is an active, midwater swimmer that needs room to cruise, and a well-oxygenated system with moderate to strong — but not turbulent — flow suits it well. Live rock with caves and overhangs gives it somewhere to feel secure and retreat to at night, but the aquascape should leave plenty of unobstructed swimming space. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is essential; fairy wrasses are capable jumpers, particularly when startled during introduction or a chase. This species tends to acclimate most smoothly to established, stable reef systems, and benefits from multiple small feedings throughout the day — mysis, finely chopped meaty foods, brine shrimp, and quality planktivore pellets or flakes all work well.
