Saddle Puffer (Canthigaster Coronata)
Also Known As: Saddled Toby, Crowned Puffer
Compatibility and Behavior
We present you with one of the cutest species in the hobby. Like the other tobies, the Saddle Puffer (Canthigaster coronata) hands you most of the puffer charm at a fraction of the footprint and bioload. The name comes from the distinctive darker saddle marking laid across the back, set over a pale to tan body with fine spotting along the flanks and subtle blue or green lines tracing the face and fins. Between the big eyes, short snout, and classic toby shape, it is the kind of little fish that reefers stop calling "livestock" and start calling a pet. It settles in bold, perching on ledges, inspecting any new aquascape, and hustling to the glass at feeding time. On reef safety, play it as reef safe with caution: many individuals leave most corals alone, but the genus tends to nip snails, small crabs, shrimp, and other inverts, and can sample fleshy polyps or clam mantles, so it is most reliable in a FOWLR tank or a very thoughtfully chosen mixed reef. It generally gets along with peaceful to moderately assertive tankmates, though very small or slow fish can be on the receiving end of fin nipping or an exploratory bite, especially at feeding.
Aquarium Requirements
The compact size keeps this one accessible: a tank around 40 to 55 gallons with a long footprint suits fish in the 1.5 to 2.5 inch range, with more volume always welcome. Give it sturdy live rock with caves and overhangs to retreat into, and skip sharp or unstable decor that could hurt it if it startles or inflates. The usual puffer housekeeping applies, since even a small toby is a messy eater: strong filtration, good surface agitation, and consistent maintenance. Feeding does double duty as dental care, so offer a varied meaty diet of mysis, chopped shrimp, clam, and squid alongside quality marine pellets, and work in occasional hard-shelled items to keep its beak-like teeth worn down.
