Also Known As: Nimble Spray Crab
Compatibility and Behavior
Watch a Sally Lightfoot Crab (Percnon gibbesi) work a rock face and you get why it earned the "nimble spray" name. It's genuinely fast and agile, hugging vertical surfaces and darting between crevices with a flat, oval carapace and long spidery legs mottled in brown, tan, and orange with darker banding that reads as perfect tidal-zone camouflage. For hobbyists who like a naturalistic, intertidal-style display, it's a lot of fun to watch. Just go in with clear eyes about the temperament, which is best filed under reef safe with caution. While it's small and well fed, it tends to stick to film algae, detritus, and leftovers, pulling its weight in the cleanup crew. As it grows, though, or if food runs short, it can get bolder, grabbing at small fish, nipping slow tankmates, or picking at delicate inverts, usually under cover of night. It generally does fine with larger, alert fish and sturdy inverts, but it's a poor match for very small, timid fish or prized ornamental shrimp.
Aquarium Requirements
This is a crab built for rock and current, so an established tank with strong structure, vertical faces, ledges, and overhangs, plus areas of moderate to high flow, is what keeps it happy. It clings and grazes by day and gets noticeably more active at dusk and after dark. A single crab can live in a wide range of tank sizes, so stability matters more than volume here: steady salinity, good oxygenation, and regular feedings of algae-based foods and small meaty items go a long way toward keeping it from turning predatory. One practical note, since these crabs are quick and strong for their size, secure loose frags and top-heavy rockwork they might knock loose while scrambling around.
