Stars and Stripes Puffer (Arothron Hispidus)
Also Known As: White-Spotted Puffer
Compatibility and Behavior
The Stars and Stripes Puffer (Arothron hispidus) wears its name on its body. A creamy base is dusted with speckled "star" spots across the front half, giving way to horizontal "stripe" lines toward the rear, and the two-part pattern is exactly what earned it the name. It is a thick, torpedo-shaped fish with big expressive eyes and a blunt, dog-like face, and like the best of the puffers it is a real personality, quick to recognize its keeper and interact at feeding time. Day to day it is curious, intelligent, and often downright bold, cruising the rockwork, investigating decor, and hovering at the glass to keep an eye on the room. The reef-safety story runs true to the group: it is not reef safe and will readily eat snails, crabs, shrimp, clams, and other inverts, and may bite or damage soft corals and sessile inverts, so it belongs in a fish-only or FOWLR system. It usually coexists with other robust, non-nippy tankmates like larger wrasses, tangs, angels, and some triggers, but very small, delicate, or easily bullied fish can be at risk of harassment or an accidental bite, especially during energetic feedings. And as with all puffers, it can inflate when severely stressed, so handle it calmly and deliberately to avoid forcing it to puff, particularly in air.
Aquarium Requirements
This is one of the larger puffers we carry, so plan on serious space from the start. For small to large juveniles in the 1.5 to 4.5 inch range, a tank around 90 gallons is a realistic starting point, with larger volumes strongly preferred as the fish grows and as tankmates are added. Aquascape with solid rock, caves, and overhangs where the puffer can rest and feel secure, and steer clear of sharp decor or unstable rock stacks that could injure it if it bumps or inflates. Filtration matters more here than with most fish, since these are messy, heavy eaters that generate real waste, so plan on high-capacity biological and mechanical filtration, excellent surface agitation, and regular water changes. Feeding doubles as dental care: offer meaty foods like shrimp, squid, clam, and krill, and work in hard-shelled items such as crab or clam on the half shell to help wear down their beak-like teeth. A tight-fitting lid guards against a sudden dash to the surface, and stable, low-stress conditions go a long way toward keeping one calm and healthy over the long haul.
Specifications
Approximate Size: Sm: 1.5–2.5", Md: 2.5–3.5", Lg: 3.5–4.5"
Diet: Carnivore; meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, clam, and krill, plus hard-shelled items like crab or clam on the half shell to help wear down the beak-like teeth

Special Considerations: Not reef safe and will prey on inverts and may damage corals; hard-shelled foods will keep its beak-like teeth worn down; grows large and needs significant long-term space; handle and net with care, and avoid forcing it to inflate in air, which can be dangerous for the fish
